Patriotism: a love of one’s homeland, implying a readiness to act in its defense and to favour it in other dealings. It is often confused with nationalism, but is a far older idea, and carries with a less theoretical baggage. Nationalism presupposes that nations exist as real and distinct entities; patriotism, on the other hand, may simply involve attachment to a physical locality or a way of life, and need not involve any abstract idea of ‘country’.
